Title: “Sight for Africa” Eye Health Forum on China-Africa Cooperation
Date: 18 August, 2018 (Saturday), 13:30-17:30
Venue: China National Convention Center, Beijing, China (Room 308)
Objective: To discuss ways to band together for facing the severe situation of blindness prevention and control in Africa.
Background: Africa accounts for 16% of the world's population, but only owns 3% of the world's health workers. According to the latest statistics of the International Association for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in 2017, sub-Saharan African countries have only 3 ophthalmologists, 1 optometrist and 5 ophthalmologists per million people, far below the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended requirements. In terms of cataract surgery rate(CSR), only Botswana’s CSR above 1,000, 12 countries’ between 500 and 1000, and the rest 30 countries’ CSR less than 500.
In 2015, President Xi Jinping placed China-Africa health collaboration as one of the top 10 priorities between China and Africa on Johannesburg Summit Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). During the Ministerial Forum of China-Africa Health Development in 2017, a joint declaration emphasized that China would bring the commitment into action to enhance the accessibility of health care in Africa.
Africa has been the most important partner of China’s “The Belt and Road” national strategy. China started to build Silk Road of Health Cooperation since 2016. The Health Cooperation aims to improve people’s health condition in countries alongside The Belt and Road by establishing innovative cooperation mode, promoting practical cooperation, etc.
